"How Do I Get Started in This Sport?"

I was lucky to have had Charles my husband bring me in to shooting. But even he got in to it by accident. He was a Marine for a few years in his early days, (Oh sorry, once a Marine always a Marine) and shot an M14. Much later he went to a gun store to purchase one for himself. The salesman mentioned one can compete with these. Charles looked up on line where near Seattle was a range and match and just showed up. ANYONE can show up and compete. In fact ranges and the NRA and CMP are begging for new shooters. Especially women! If you let them know ahead of time they usually have guns and ammo to loan you. The NRA is good to sponsor a bit of this to encourage people. How would one start now?

Well, for one, you can email me and I will help you find a local range in your area and how to find a monthly schedule. There are so many types of shooting disciplines, Pistols, air rifles, sporting clays, biathalon, high power, scopes and many in between each of these. Most ranges, indoor and outdoor facilities have orientations for new shooters. They will even loan or rent guns and you can purchase ammo from them until you get to a point to buy or make your own. Don’t be intimidated!

I will admit, walking in to a gun store or range by yourself can be a bit scary. And it is pretty rare to find a woman behind the counter. But it is not! Bring a pal with you as a hobby to do together if it helps motivate you. Just about every shop or indoor range facility will have their own classes to offer or know who to refer you to. Walk up to the counter and say “I am new to this and I don’t know where to start”. They will gladly help you out. Instructors or range officers may come across very firm and strict about the rules. Understandably! The most important thing about this sport is safety. Not to mention, it is so much fun!
