Sunny and Warm! Finally! Machias 500 yard Prone Match

The sun came out and temperature finally rose in Seattle. Today we had a match at Machias just north of Seattle. I was testing out 3 different loads of ammo. My first string I used the old stuff that I had a problem with last week. I wanted to verify my sanity or insanity that it was not so good. It was not the bullet brand, it was that I loaded too much Varget with the Lapua case and strong bullet. I was using 47g. I was right. The shots were all over the place. My second string was like night and day.

I used the new Berger bullets I had won and lessened the powder to 46.5. All else was the same. I cleaned the target with 13 X. Nice tight group! Yea! The 3rd string I used the new Sierra bullets and all else the same. Also shot well. The Berger group was much tighter but the wind was really switchy on last string which I did not have on 2nd string. But overall much better! Asa, the guy who was pulling my target brought me a “medal” he made out of the spotter I apparently hit twice. (I am wearing it in photo) He made it out of the little black and white pasters we use to cover holes. It was perfect. He is an engineer. Go figure!

I have decided to use the Berger bullet with 46.5 grains of Varget with Lapua brass and Fed210m primers. I will have one more chance to play with them next weekend locally before I head to Tri-Cities for the State Palma Champs.

The other photo is just of a pile of rifles on the rack. Such a great sight! Yea! Match season is upon us.

Oh yes! How could I forget! Jim Cloward, our match director had a scary fall and hit his head. He sliced half of his ear off! He had to go to the hospital and have it sewn back on. He actually made it back for the awards ceremony. Looking at the mangled mess it was I would have just gone home if I were him. Trooper. But I know it will be throbbing tonight. Long live Jim!
