Need Smaller Aperture for My Rightsight

I use “The Rightsight” a Stalling’s Machine product on my Palma rifle. (The one on the left in the photo) It is my front globe sight. I switched to this when I went to the Phoenix match in February. The sight I had was a 19mm approximately, and I had no idea what I was missing. The Rightsight is a 30mm sight. What’s the difference?

A lot! The owner of Stalling’s Machines, Wayne, was competing in Phoenix also. He had me look through this sight on his rifle. Holy Moly! Much brighter! Because it is 30mm, when I look through it I can see my target AND number board AND even part of targets next to me! Makes cross-firing less of a threat. I bought it from him on the spot, put it on my rifle back in Seattle and won the next match at Machias with it. But, there has been one problem.

The Rightsight comes with an adjustable iris.  I bought the 4.0mm – 6.0mm. It is way too big. How should I explain? If you see the photo at right it has the circle on the lens. That circle is what you focus on around the black dot of the target however many yards away. You want a white line between the dot of target and the circle on iris but it should be snug. That’s the way I like anyway. The further back you go from the target the smaller the black dot gets. You then need to tighten the aperture or iris to fit around the dot. You want it like that so you are able to hold strong and call your shots. I should be able to say after I pull the trigger that it is center or 2:00 or 6:00, etc. If the white space is too big around the dot you cannot do that. At Rattlesnake this weekend it was very bright and when I got back to 900 and especially 1000 yards I tightened the iris as far down as it would go and I still had a huge white space. I had elevation issues and could not give an accurate call. I thought I was calling it but the shots came up totally different.

So I am sending the sight back to Wayne and he is putting the smaller lens in that is 2.9 – 4.9. Thanks Wayne! I love your product! Now I will have a snug white line no matter what yardage I am at. I am telling you. This sport has so many details you learn about as you go. Trial and error I suppose! Or, trial and success. 🙂
