45MPH Winds! Worst Snake Bite Yet.

“Snake” refers to Rattlesnake Ridge, the range where the Palma Match is being held. Everyone calls it the Snake because it is always REALLY windy here and “it” will bite you hard! I have only shot here half a dozen times but today was the windiest I have experienced. Others had been here many times and also felt the same. Look at the flag in the photo. If it could have it would have been reaching straight up to the sky. Thank goodness today was only a practice day!

(The second photo was of Kozmo at the back of the truck. His ears were flapping away and his beard was completely sideways. He loved it.)

I shot at 800 yards this morning and it was “only” about 30 – 35mph winds. It was a 7:00 to 6:00 wind so it was not too difficult to read and you did not need as much wind put on. I had about 7 – 8 minutes worth. If it was coming across from 3:00 or 9:00 triple that! My scores were fine! I kept it in the 10 ring with one 9 and one 8. Happy!!! 900 and 1000 were a different story.

I bagged out of them. I was not the only one! That is where it turned to 45mph. Charles was a trooper though and hung in there. It was his first time shooting this distance. He had 18 minutes of wind on!!! Once again, if the wind was coming from the side it would have been impossible and the targets would have started ripping apart. We would have had to call off the shooting. But he was able to get zeros!

There were a lot of bullets going all over the place. In the pits pulling targets I would see an X or a 10 and then the next shot is a miss! One gets blown off the target if a gust came through or let off too much. And these targets are huge. To get blown off means something. I was not too worried about not shooting the last two strings. I do have perfect elevations for this range and distance. The wind is never the same here anyway. I know, I know. Practice never hurts you. It was painful being out there! The truck was a much nicer place. Kozmo and I were happy. Pray for lighter winds tomorrow.
